A Genuine Excuse

A groan escaped my lips,

as she entered, hands on hips.

she said, “Show me now”.

Oh what to do, and how?

I stammered, as I stood staring,

I shivered, as she stood glaring.

Think, think, think, think, think,

but all I did was innocently blink.

I knew it wouldn’t work, so well,

not a trick for which teachers fell.

“So boy, what’s the reason today?”

she bellowed, while I thought what would I say.

I might make a face so guilty,

and beg for her plea.

Or maybe I could think and say,

“Oh miss, when I went to play”.

“The dog next door gobbled it for lunch,

I heard it eat crunch by crunch”.

Or ,I could think and think harder,

and say I forgot it in the larder.

Or maybe I could say,

that on my way…

The bus was stopped by an army officer,

so, I gave my dear homework to her.

Or maybe an alien kidnaped me,

after handing my homework, I was set free.

I guess something believable would do,

something that actually sounds true.

“Yes?!” Madame’s voice thundered,

well what could I do? I shattered.

“Actually, my homework fell out,

the bus sped on, before I could shout”.

I thought it seemed very convincing,

But, before I could move, or continue thinking.

I landed in Mr. Tibb’s cabin,

The lecture started about my sin.

I learnt something very important,

never think of an excuse in an instant.

It will always land you in a big bubble,

of unending trouble.
